When it comes to counting, practice is the key. Give your little learners plenty of opportunities to count objects so that they can really master that one-to-one correspondence. Once students have a strong grasp on counting, they are able to start working on more advanced math skills like addition!
Counting Opportunities Are All Around Us
What I love most about teaching little ones to count, is that teaching opportunities are all around us! You can count pieces of candy, ducklings on the pond, or the stairs you climb. I love using classroom manipulatives like stacking cubes or counting bears to give my little learners more opportunities to practice, as well.
I also love to add in hands-on counting centers!
Counting centers are such a fun way to practice counting skills. They give children more opportunities to count, but they also give young learners a chance to work on completing a more structured task. Centers can be used in small groups, independently, or even at a guided math center with you!

This clip card center is low-prep, so you can have it ready to use in no time! Simply laminate, slice the task cards apart, and add in your clothespins. I love using clothespins because then my students can also work on developing fine motor muscles! Yay for multitasking centers!
