They also make adorable bulletin board displays. Test out this free butterfly craftivity to see how easy it is to add into your writing block.
Simply print the writing page that best meets the needs of your writers. It comes with 3 different options with differentiated writing lines so that these can be used with multiple grade levels and writing abilities. Then print your toppers. Then grab the supplies you want for decorating the toppers.
The Activity
I love pairing writing craftivities with read alouds. For this craftivity I recommend using your favorite butterfly book.
My favorite is “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by: Eric Carle
You can click the photo of the book to use my Amazon affiliate link. That means if you purchase using this link, I will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
I love this book because it clearly shows the life cycle of a butterfly and it has beautiful, attention grabbing illustrations.
After reading the story, have a class discussion about butterflies. Ask questions to help activate prior knowledge. This gets them comfortable with the subject so that they are ready to write all of the wonderful things they know about butterflies. This also reduces the “I don’t know what to write” dilemma.
After writing, let them decorate their topper. This freebie comes with 2 different butterfly toppers to choose from. You can use your desired art supplies for your project.
Some ideas to decorate your toppers:
- Watercolor Paints
- Crayons
- Colored Pencils
- Markers
- Chalk
- Tear Art
- Tissue Paper Squares
- and more…
For this craftivity I chose watercolor paints. The watercolor butterflies turned out beautiful. I recommend using card stock if you are painting so that your paper doesn’t look as wrinkled if they use lots of water.
