CVC words are great for beginning readers. These simple, one-syllable words allow children to decode and blend successfully. They are a stepping stone to reading larger and more complex words. I am excited to share a low-prep CVC board game that you can play with your beginning readers. Making reading fun is such an important part of learning to read. We want children to love reading!
Low Prep
Being a teacher or parent is busy! So spending hours prepping activities isn’t really ideal. Lucky for you, this activity is truly print-and-go. No cutting, pasting, or folding required. Simply print the number of game boards you need and grab some dice and game pieces and you are ready to play. You can use game pieces from other games, or you can simply use small manipulatives like mini-erasers as game pieces.
How to Play
I love when games have simple rules, so that children can maximize their time spent playing (and working on the important reading skills that the game was created for). For this game, players place all of their game pieces at the “start” spot. Then players take turns rolling the die. They move the number of spaces that they roll and read each word they pass along the way. The player to reach the “finish” space first is the winner.

Looking for More CVC Practice?
I am so excited to share some of my other favorite CVC word resources. You can get a closer look by clicking any of the photos.
These CVC Word Builder cards are such a fun, and hands-on way to practice building CVC words. These work great as a word work center, in small groups, or even in a sensory bin. We added our letters into a bin of black sand for a fun sensory activity.
Another resource you may love is the Ultimate Short Vowel CVC Bundle. This bundle is filled with over 400 pages of hands-on activities that work on CVC words. It has games, puzzles, word family booklets, clip cards, sound boxes, and more.
There is a set of each activity for each short vowel sound. So you can easily focus on one vowel sound at a time, or you can mix them up and practice them all.
These CVC Playdough Mats are a kid-favorite! I use the Shape and Learn Play-doh Stamps with mine, but other teachers have told me that they have used other brands and they work great too. Here is my Amazon Affiliate link to the Play-doh Stamps if you are wanting the same set.
(As an Amazon Affiliate I make a small amount on qualifying purchases, at no additional cost to you. This income helps me support my site.)
