Space is such a fascinating subject to learn about. I am so excited to share this simple space themed write the room freebie with you! This free activity is perfect to use with your space unit. It helps get students familiar with the names of the planets, and even has them write them in order of their distance from the sun.
Simple Prep
Prep for this activity is fast and easy. Just print out the sheet with the planet names and cut the pieces apart. I used my paper slicer to make prep even quicker. Then use tape to hang the cards around the room. I like to keep them in areas that are around eye level so they are easily visible for little ones. I also recommend placing them on different areas to keep it more exciting like cubbies, walls, backs of chairs, on the white board, desks, etc.
Alternate activity: These cards can also be added to a sensory bin if you do not want to use this as a write the room activity.
The Activity
I love using write the room activities. They allow students to get up and out of their seats while they are working. This one is fun to use during a space unit. You can let your students get up and search for the different planets. Then they will write them in order of their distance from the sun on their recording sheets. The recording sheets have pictures that match the cards around the room. By using the picture clues they can still correctly write them in order even if they did not know the order before beginning the activity.
After the activity you can discuss how the planets closest to the sun reach the warmest temperatures, and the farther the planets get from the sun the cooler they get. Just click the “Click here to download” button below to get your free download.
