Penguins are such a fun animal to teach about during the wintertime. Since writing is one of my favorite things to teach, I wanted to share this adorable writing craftivity that you can use to complement your penguin unit. It also makes a perfect display for your hallway or bulletin board.
Getting Ready
This writing activity comes with differentiated writing lines so that you can pick the option that is appropriate for your writers. There is a large dotted-line option for your earliest writers, a regular sized dotted center option, and also a regular lined option without the dotted line for your more advanced writers.
Once you choose the writing page that is the best fit for your class, simply print them out.
For the penguin craft you will need black, orange, and white paper. It is written on the top of each page which color you will need to copy onto. Then you just make enough copies for your class.
Each student will need scissors and a glue stick for the craft.
The Activity
I always like to have them complete their writing before they do the craft. It gives them a chance to really focus on their writing before the craft supplies take their attention.
This writing prompt is a fun way to really let your students get creative. It is so entertaining to read about what they would do if they had a pet penguin.
If, by chance, you have a student that just “can’t think of anything to write,” here are a few questions that may spark some ideas:
- Where would it sleep?
- What would you feed it?
- What would you name it?
- What would it do for fun?
- What would your parents think of your penguin?
- How would it like the weather?
- Would you bring it to school?
Once they have completed their writing, it is time to make their very own penguin craft. I love to attach these to the top of their writing and use them as a display in the hallway. It is a great way to show off their writing.
I always demonstrate how to put the penguin craft together so that they can visually see where each piece of the penguin goes. Then I hang the example up on the board for them to refer to if needed.
